Halodad Production Art

The final film plates were provided to me from the director. For the eggtree design I used Max and Mudbox to get to a 50% solution then painted on top of them using Photoshop. Each matte took about 6-10 hours each. The matte with the giant pointy rocks I ended up painting from scratch. That's why it still looks like concept art and not as real as it should be. I need to find a better solution. I wish I could have spent more time on them. But I have very little of it these days. Great learning experience though. Need more practice.

After looking at this one for a while I'm not sure if I like this design. I think I got caught up in texturing before I realized this design wasn't working. Any way here is my Yoda for this time period. I figured his advantage is he can see everything. He even has 4 arms to fight in back and the front. The Asian text is made up. On to the next one.

Halodad matte production

Haven't been on here for a while. Been crazy busy.

These are some concept mattes I did for Halodad. We are still in concept phase so the objective is to just lay down rough comps. The director gave me plates to sketch on. I put just enough detail to sell the idea. Luckily the shots are locked off so no camera tracking. These are really fun to do. I can't wait to see the final shots.

This was a quick turn around for a game company in town. Can't talk about the company or the game since it's still in development. A little under an hour on this one. Just a concept of some old barns. The game is centered around the Midieval time period.

Ol' Painless has friends now. The morning before the siege. The 3 together remind me of the 3 little pigs. Almost done with this one. Just got to add a few soldiers and mess around with the debris.

Still not that efficient with my techniques yet. I take too long on my decisions when it comes to light and color. I'm going to try different variations on texturing as well. Gotta keep practicing.

Arcade boxes for my nephews

Here are the final boxes I made for my nephews. Christmas was awesome this year. It was great to see how excited they were to receive them. I bundled MK vs DC with the Batman box and Street Fighter 4 with Spiderman. Unfortunately I only got one shot of one of my nephews holding up his. His name ironically is "Ryu". See the little guy holding up the box. He can only throw hadokens at the moment. He's still practicing he tells me. Super awesome!

I got a time lapsed video of some of the box production and artwork. It will be up soon.

I was tinkering with this sketch while I was testing out my tablet. I did a little tweak and started to add some sort of story. Don't know what that is yet. Mostly just wanted to expand the shot. Unicron Update 3

Finally got some time in on ol' Mr. Uni. This is where it stands right now. There are some issues with lighting composition I need to work on. This piece is taking a long time to produce only because of the final size I'm painting at. The details have to hold at 70 inches long because I plan on producing a print at that size. Stay tuned.

Noodled the Akuma a bit. I still need to finish the legs, belt and the ball necklace he usually has on. Played around with the textures then kicked out a turntable with the built in feature in Mudbox. I really love this program. Now if I can find some time to really make portfolio quality pieces.

I did this for a friend of mine Kelly Baber. He's a music producer and he asked me if I could contribute to his project. Couldn't pass an opportunity to collab with him. He's extremely talented. It was really fun working with him on this. We'll be linking up at the end of this month in New Mexico to chill, game out and maybe work on a few more pieces.

The more I kept working on it the more I realized that perspective was off. I got frustrated and put on the back burner. I found some time during the holiday break to work on personal projects and Unicron was on the list. So this time around I generated a 3d model the help me out. I really want to do this piece justice. I used Studio Max for my 3d package.I still gotta model the head, arms, wings and planets. Stay tuned.

I was hoping he would be in TF2 some how. Gotta keep wishing for that one I guess. Still wanted to a tribute piece. I had this idea that Unicron was sitting on a throne carved out a huge planet. His hands rest on small moons. I figure he would create his own gravity so there would be a asteroid belt around him made out of debris of planets he consumed.

I might redo this one at this point. The more I flesh this out the more I see flaws in my perspective. That's what I get for being sloppy at the beginning. Like building a house with uneven foundation.

ipod touch-Sketchbook Mobile

A friend of mine let me play with his iphone and it had an app on there called Sketchbook Mobile from Autodesk. It lets you sketch and paint with your finger. It was only $1.99. I was so impressed that I went out and bought a ipod touch just for that app. I'm still exploring the capabilities. But so far it's a lot of fun. My only suggestion is they make a cursor offset from your finger so you can see what your painting. Right now your finger covers up the cursor so it's hard to be accurate sometimes. But it's a minor complaint. Can't wait for the next version. Hope they make this app for the Android because most likely that will be my next phone.

Birthday present for my niece

My niece turned 14 this weekend and she had asked me to do a Larry Fitzgerald painting. She's a native Arizonan so naturally she like the Cardinals. I wish I had more time to do a acrylic piece but a digital version will have to do for now. There are parts I would like to work on, mostly the hands because I couldn't figure out what they looked like based off the reference I had. I needed more time to do more studies. This was more of an observation piece meaning I just looked at a existing picture I pulled off the internet. Didn't have time to create some original reference. I was able to video capture this one as well. Hope you like it.

Warhammer 40K

My buddy Jared asked me to illustrate a character for Warhammer 40k. This character is suppose to be an assassin. Started sketching it and it reminded me of snake eyes with a huge sword. It was really fun designing this character. It could use a little polish but I'll leave it as is due to time. Might noodle it a bit more in the future.

The Ryu Painting

This was a B-Day gift for a good buddy of mine. His wife commisioned me to paint one of his favorite videogame characters. It's also one of mine. We play Street Fighter all the time so the project was fitting. Executed it in Photoshop using a wacom tablet. The Japanese characters stand for "Shotokan" which is the fighting style that Ryu uses. It's a title for a certain form of karate. Got the Japanese characters and the background information off of Wikipedia. Hope you guys like it.

People who know me know I'm a huge Street Fighter fan. I started making arcade sticks out of 360 controllers over a year ago and I'm still building them. I had this idea of a pair of arcade sticks that was integrated into a small bar that hides a keg. You can either play standing or sitting while enjoying cold ones.

I modeled and textured a quick rough and matted it into a photo I took of my living room.

I had this funny idea of a crazy village kid in the Philippines who was a genius. He likes to build robots from scrap metal and he makes one that roasts Lecheon (roast pig) and it walks the food down to the market. He makes a pretty good living and supports his family with his new invention.

I'm still working it. I might change the design completely. I have this other idea I want to flesh out.

The Steampunk challenge

I entered the cgtalk Steampunk Challenge and didn't get very far. As in most cases I got too busy to finish.

I had this idea of space shuttles that were powered by hot air balloons and steam. The shuttle would get to the highest altitude with the balloons then propulsion would be generated by the steam engines. I still plan on using this idea to generate a 3d shot. Hopefully I can find time to do it.

This is also an area I need to improve on. I work with some really talented animators. I try to pick their brains as much as I can. Anyway just wanted to test out a camera move. Hope to work on the texturing more. I also need to finish the base and other structures surrounding the sphere. I might have to go back and do some design refinement on the matte I plan to use. Just picking my battles right now.

3D modeling and texturing

At this point I'm regretting not focusing on the design more. As I started to model I realize that I was still designing. By nailing down the design first I wouldn't be wasting time redesigning. I could be concentrating on modeling. I need to keep those processes seperate.

I find it very tedious and difficult unwrapping my UVs. Still trying to wrap my head around the concept. The texturing is also new to me. Still got a lot to practice on.

Matte Painting Practice

Been trying to practice Matte Painting as well as my 3D work. I have done several Mattes but I never camera project them or animate anything in them. I do matte painting at work but animators usually project it for me. This project is merely a vehicle to help me learn. I chose to do a simple design to ease into the modeling and texturing aspects.
